Some of the older tunes - Ring of Fire, Paranoid and the like - are from before the 'video age' and therefore are accompanied by still photos and fitting televisual special effects. ![]() In the name of entertainment, there is visual accompaniment, consisting of original promo videos in some cases. Select a song - preferably one that you're familiar with, just so you don't make a complete fool of yourself - and sing along with the highlighted lyrics on screen. This means the likes of Johnny Cash, Dusty Springfield and Madonna testing your tunefulness/tunelessness for this outing (see full list of songs to murder below).Īs with the other SingStar games, the premise is simpler than writing a Xmas card. Watered-down rock lovers can pick tracks such as 3 Doors Down's "When I'm Gone" and Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life," or even go for The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom." Any player over the age of fifteen will probably discard these options and choose those few tracks that seem completely out of place in this compilation: Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why," Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" and Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready To Make Nice." For everybody else's needs, there's a good amount of trashiness in Pink's "Who Knew" and Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry." Any other track will likely be forgotten the moment the game is back on the shelf.Party season 2006 is upon us and, not content with its SingStar releases thus far, Sony is back with a discful of what it deems suitable legends. The game does a good job at keeping the mood light with songs that anybody could have listened to on the radio. Weirdly enough, the only missing star is Madonna, the first name that actually comes to mind when thinking of pop music. There are Ashlee Simpson, Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado, Michelle Branch and many, many others. Rihanna's "Umbrella" is the perfect anthem for a game that also proudly features Jennifer Lopez's "Jenny From the Block," Avril Lavigne's "My Happy Ending" and Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder." It's girlfest, or maybe sugarfest: no other SingStar has ever seen this massive of a presence of female artists. 2, whose tracklist could easily be played at any Wet Seal store in a shopping mall. The same could be said about SingStar Pop Vol. The first SingStar Pop that was released in North America about a year and a half ago featured a soundtrack that appealed more to girls in their early teens than to the average PS2 owners in their 20s or 30s. Sony's idea of pop music seems to be very different from what one would expect in the United States. And this is precisely why we might see an increasing number of teenage girls, country lovers and older players join the army of SingStar with these three new releases. Performing well is easy, though, as the goal here is not to unlock new tracks or beat the opponents SingStar is more of a party game where all the participants can have fun regardless of their vocal skills. A colored bar keeps track of the player's pitch on-screen, making their score increase when the right note is hit and decrease when they flub it. In a nutshell, SingStar requires players to sing by matching their voices with the original track - and the original music video - playing in the background. When comparing the new installments to the previous ones, nothing has changed in terms of gameplay. ![]() The format is, as usual, a package of 30 songs for each title, plus five differently themed medleys that very few players will ever care to try out. 2 being dedicated to the latest mainstream radio hits, SingStar Legends representing a collection of timeless classics, and SingStar Country offering exactly what the name suggests. The games span across different music genres, with SingStar Pop Vol. Three new titles have just hit the stores almost simultaneously, in an attempt to target potential new karaoke fans. Sony seems, however, to have a completely different idea, as the stream of new releases for company's previous console shows no signs of letting up. With the release of two SingStar installments on PS3 which offer the option to buy hundreds of great downloadable songs, one would expect the PS2 games to be dead once and for all. ![]()
